Plates on Walls

Image via Remodelista.
Still life by Stella Nicolaisen.
In the past, I wasn't so keen on the idea of having plates on walls. It seemed so old fashioned, however, over the last wee while I have been seeing some great examples around and recently my art installer hung a range of vintage plates on my client's wall. What's the point of keeping them in a cupboard collecting dust when they can be visually enjoyed?
I like the top image with its collection of plates and pictures together - there is even one plate facing the wall so that you appreciate the detail underneath.
The lower image has a sweet theme of leaves and flowers for its plate collection. Looks great against the dark wall.

Removing Vinyl Lettering from Walls

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

I've had this saying on one of my walls for a while now and, even though I love the saying, I decided I was tired of having it on the wall. I assumed that removing it would be a no-brainer type of project that would take two minutes to do and that would be that. Hmmmm... not true.

I heated the letters with the blow dryer as I was pulling them off (I had heard that this was the best way to ensure that they would come off easily). This worked well, but still left a sticky residue with a clear image of where each letter had been. By the time I got to the last letter, the large H in Home, I was on a roll and got a little ahead of the blow dryer in pulling off the letter. Unfortunately I was left with exposed sheetrock as it pulled the paint off in the form of a large part of the letter. :-( At this point I knew I would be re-painting that section of the wall. I used sandpaper to sand around where the letter had removed the paint to smooth and blend it, and then used rubbing alcohol to remove the sticky residue of the rest of the letters (again, I had read that this was the thing to do). It worked, but the rubbing alcohol removed some of the paint from the wall.

After repainting, the wall looks good as new so it turned out fine, but I have to admit I was a little frustrated during the process.

I would probably use vinyl letters again at some point but not before knowing that there is a way to remove them without having to repaint. I do have flat paint on my walls, so I think this may have been the source of some of my issues? Any experience, comments, ideas on the best way to remove vinyl lettering from walls?

Creative Decorating Ideas - 8

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

We've already talked about decorating with branches a couple of times on this blog, but let's do it again, shall we? :-) Paint some branches for a unique color splash. When you get tired of them, just paint them a different color. Definitely an inexpensive accessory option.

Inspiration in Pink

As you're probably aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many in blogland have committed to doing a pink post sometime during the month as a reminder. Great idea, don't you think?

My mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor, and we are very grateful that she has done so well and is currently the picture of health!

The rest of this post is rather random, but the inspiration is all in pink!

There are a tish too many flowers for me in the first photo in this post, but the way they broke up the "pinkness" with splashes of turquoise is interesting.

What do you think of reversible window treatments? I've always been intrigued by the idea because I get bored and it would be nice to just flip the panels around for a new look. I do like neutral lining facing the outside though, so...

When you need a bedroom that can multitask, a desk can be used in place of a nightstand. This may violate the "peaceful retreat" idea for some, but there are times when you may not have a lot of other options. I've used this idea before and it's worked very well.

New Work - Kids Bedroom

My client and I had seen some great inspiration images of large maps on walls and have done this for her son's bedroom. It took a while to find the right map - with the right colours and size. The rest of the walls have been painted a soft green similar to a green on the map. It looks really effective and you can spent hours staring at it - where you've been and where you want to go...
